Now that the winter months are long gone, plenty of people are considering bringing out their Jayco trailers and hitting the road to bask in the warmth of summer. Some are even searching for Jayco travel trailers for sale, preparing for the upcoming RV season.
However, your well-loved RV may not be in roadworthy condition after a couple of months of storage. Here’s how you can prepare your used Jayco trailers for a great season of recreational travel, or purchase one of your own.
Check the RV for Damage
If you stored your RV outside under a tarp rather than indoors, snow could pile up on the roof and cause your rig to collapse. You can avoid this by shoveling snow off your Jayco trailer every few weeks during the winter. Inspect the RV for any visible damage and repair it before hitting the road.
Inspect the Tires
Tires can develop flat spots, lose air pressure, and deteriorate when they sit too long. Check that the tires are still in good condition and are sufficiently pressurized. Additionally, ensure that the lug nuts holding the tires in place are tightened. Ideally, the tires and exterior of a Jayco trailer for sale should be in good condition.
Prepare Your Water System
The method you use to prepare your water system will depend on how you got your used Jayco trailer ready for winter. Draining the petcock and then filling it up will suffice if you use low-pressure air to empty the water system before winter.
If you used RV antifreeze to protect the system from the freezing temperatures of winter, you will have to flush the water tank, pump, and lines with water. The following simple procedure should do the trick:
- Mix a gallon of water with one cup of bleach and pour it into the water tank
- Fill the tank with water, and then turn on the faucets in the RV until you can smell bleach
- Allow the water system to sit with the bleach water for 24 hours
- Drain the tank, fill it with fresh water and run the water through all the faucets until the bleach smell disappears
- You may have to use a few tanks of freshwater to completely flush the system of the bleach water
Plug Your Jayco Trailer into Shore Power
Do this after the tank system is flushed and filled with water to avoid burning your water heater.
Test Your RV Appliances
This includes gas appliances, the furnace, water heater, and fridge. Check that you have a fire extinguisher and that it is still full. Additionally, replace the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detector.
